The
setup is designed to study the Hydraulic Ram, a device used to pump a small
amount of water to a high head using a large quantity of water available at low
head. It operates on the principle of water hammer, which occurs when flowing
water is suddenly stopped in a long pipe, creating a pressure wave. The setup
includes a pipe section fitted with a pulse valve and non-return valve, a
supply reservoir on a stand connected to an overhead tank, and an air vessel
above the valve chamber to smooth out cyclic fluctuations from the Ram's
delivery. By adjusting the pressure applied to the pulse valve, the closing
pressure can be varied, affecting the operating characteristics. The flow rate
of both useful and waste water is measured using the provided measuring tank
and stopwatch. Pressure and vacuum gauges are connected on the delivery and
suction sides for measurement purposes.
