The Pelton wheel turbine is an impulse water turbine named after Sir L.A. Pelton (1829–1908) from California, USA. It is a tangential flow turbine where water hits the buckets along the tangent of the runner. Only kinetic energy is used at the inlet, and both inlet and outlet operate at atmospheric pressure. This type of turbine is mainly used for high head applications.

 

The setup includes a runner with multiple buckets mounted on it. Water is directed to the turbine tangentially through a stainless-steel nozzle and spear using a centrifugal pump. The flow of water to the turbine is controlled by adjusting the spear position with a handwheel. The runner is attached to a central stainless-steel shaft, which connects to a braking system on the other end. A transparent acrylic window in the turbine casing allows observation of water striking the buckets. The entire runner setup is supported by a strong mild steel frame.

 

A brake dynamometer is used to apply load to the turbine, which helps calculate its efficiency. A pressure gauge is also installed at the turbine's inlet to measure the total head of water supplied.
