When two parallel forces engage in an uncoordinated manner, shear forces result. For instance, the expansion and contraction of the plates causes an equal and opposite force to be applied to the rivets in a huge boiler constructed from sections of sheet metal plate that are riveted together.

Rotational forces within the beam known as bending moments are what bend the beam. The sum of all external forces multiplied by the distance perpendicular to the direction of the force at any point within a beam determines its bending moment.
