The
portal frames used for measuring horizontal reaction are made from rectangular
mild steel flats with a cross section of 10 mm thick and 40 mm wide, providing
added rigidity. All components are in excellent condition. The ends of the
frames can be fixed or hinged, depending on the requirements. Ball bearing
rollers are installed at the end where the horizontal reaction is to be
measured. These rollers move smoothly on a rolling platform. A chord is
attached to the roller end and connected to a spring balance, which measures
the horizontal reaction. The spring balance also captures data for measuring
the slope and deflection. The two columns of the portal frame can be either
clamped (fixed) or pivoted (hinged), depending on the needs of the experiment.
Experimental Objective
To
study the behavior of a portal frame under different end conditions.
