Permeability is the property of soil that allows water to flow through its interconnected voids. Permeability is an important engineering property that controls the settling rate of saturated compressible soil layers and the flow rate of groundwater. Permeability is considered when pumping groundwater, distance of well points from groundwater extraction sites, water retention in reservoirs, design of dams and selection of soil used for various embankments of dams and reservoirs. The coefficient of permeability can be calculated from effective particle diameter, porosity, specific surface area and compaction tests. But permeability depends on several factors; therefore, it is considered more accurate to determine permeability by a direct laboratory method using a device called a Permeameter. The sample used in the permeameter is small, takes less time, and the results obtained are accurate. There are two types of penetrometers namely standard head penetrometer and falling head penetrometer. Falling Head Permeameters are used to test remoulded or undisturbed fine-grained soils with a coefficient of permeability less than 10.2 cm/s, and Constant Head Permeameters are used to achieve coarse-grained cohesion in the absence of soil.
